Ingredients

Sandwiches
  • 8 bread
  • 8 deli ham
  • 8 turkey
  • 8 cheese (cheddar or Swiss)
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened

Equipment

  • 1 cast iron skillet

Method

Prep and assemble
  1. Butter one side of each bread slice so the exterior crisps on the grate.
  2. Build each sandwich with butter-side out: bread, cheese, ham, turkey, cheese, then bread on top.
Grill over the fire
  1. Place sandwiches on a campfire grate over medium heat so they contact the bars and develop grill marks.
  2. Grill for 4-5 minutes per side, until the bread is golden and the cheese fully melts.
Serve
  1. Remove sandwiches from the heat, cut in half, and serve hot with melted cheese visible at the center.

Notes

For best melt and browning, keep the heat at medium so the bread turns golden without burning before the cheese softens. Store any leftovers covered in the refrigerator up to 2 days and reheat in a skillet until hot and melty again; freezing is not recommended because bread and cheese texture can suffer. If you want a lighter option, swap the deli meat for lower-fat turkey and use a reduced-fat cheese while keeping the butter-side-out grilling method.
