Ingredients

Dry ingredients
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour Use all-purpose flour if preferred.
  • 0.5 cup whole milk or formula Choose one: whole milk or formula (warm slightly if needed).
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 0.25 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp ginger
Wet ingredients
  • 0.5 cup pumpkin puree
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter Melted.
  • 1 tbsp maple syrup Omit for babies under 1 year (honey is not safe under 1).
  • 0.5 cup whole milk or formula Choose one: whole milk or formula.
  • 0.25 tsp vanilla extract
Serving
  • 1 soft fresh fruit Examples: banana slices or cooked apple; use fruit appropriate for your baby's age.

Equipment

  • 1 waffle iron

Method

Preheat and mix
  1. Preheat a small waffle iron and grease it well so the waffles release cleanly.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together whole wheat flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger (do not add salt for babies under 1).
  3. In a second bowl, whisk pumpkin puree, egg, whole milk or formula, melted unsalted butter, maple syrup if using, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and fold just until smooth, without overmixing.
Cook mini waffles
  1. Pour batter into the waffle iron, using enough to fill but not overflow.
  2. Cook for 3-4 minutes, until the waffles are golden and set.
Cool, cut, and serve
  1. Transfer waffles to a rack or plate and cool completely to room temperature before serving to prevent burns.
  2. Cut into appropriate finger-food strips for your baby's age and stage so they’re easy to pick up.
  3. Serve with soft fresh fruit such as banana slices or cooked apple.

Notes

For the best texture, let the waffles cool fully before cutting so they stay sturdy. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 2 days; rewarm gently. Freezing works well—freeze waffles in a single layer, then bag and freeze up to 2 months; reheat in a toaster or oven until warmed through. If your baby is under 1, omit maple syrup (no honey).
